There’s nothing better than cosying up with a mince pie and a good film at this time of year. Struggling to decide what to watch? Here are our recommendations…
The Grinch
A firm favourite here at Barques with no fewer than four people saying it was their chosen Christmas film. Emma describes The Grinch as an “all time favourite, heartwarming and Christmassy” which sums it up pretty nicely!

Home Alone & Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Coming in a close second are Home Alone 1 & 2, because who doesn’t enjoy classic Christmas frolics with Kevin McCallister at this time of year?
Serendipity
Mark’s festive guilty pleasure, “It’s all about letting fate determine if a couple are meant to be together. A romantic comedy set during Christmas, plus it does have Kate Beckinsale in!”
The Nightmare Before Christmas
One of Jayne’s favourites, she describes it as, “a dark, stop-motion animation, it’s a different take on Christmas, but you’d expect nothing less from Tim Burton.”
The Muppets Christmas Carol
Katie says, “It’s got to be The Muppets Christmas Carol – an iconic 90’s Christmas film. Takes me back to being a child a Christmas. The ultimate Christmas nostalgia!”
It’s a Wonderful Life
This undisputed classic is Scott’s top pick, “although I never watch black and white films these days, it could never be bettered if remade, it’s set in a bygone era but still resonates today – nothing really changes! And no, I don’t remember seeing it first time round!!”
Santa Claus: The Movie
Last but certainly not least, Paul says, “No Christmas can possibly be complete without Santa Claus: The Movie. A financial failure, it was panned by the critics but what do they know eh? The film tells the story of a rogue elf who realises the errors of his ways and helps to save Christmas. Dudley Moore, John Lithgow and a bucket full of schmaltz. Perfect.”
