Focus on… Quarter Life

Barques has produced Quarter Life, the Jewellery Quarter’s official magazine, for the past three years. This month issue 8 hits the streets and can be found in many city centre bars, restaurants and museums across the city.

The latest issue highlights the learning and education opportunities within the Quarter, making both visitors and residents stop and think twice about the vast offering that the Jewellery Quarter holds.

We’ve picked out our favourite bits and put them in this blog, however if you’d like to read the magazine in full, scroll to the bottom of this page.

The Big Read

The Big Read

Wild in Art is back on our streets, and this time the Jewellery Quarter has five of the beautifully hand-decorated sculptures! You may remember The Big Hoot last year – the Jewellery Quarter most certainly hasn’t forgotten. The number of new and returning visitors to the area was incredible, and we’re certain that this year’s trail will be no exception. What makes this trail even more spectacular is the educational events that will be taking place around the BookBenches – visit www.thebigread.org to be the first to know.

JQ in Bloom

JQ in Bloom

You may argue that the Jewellery Quarter is beautiful enough with its traditional red brick buildings, artisan eateries and Birmingham’s last remaining Georgian square, but for the past 10 years the Quarter has been participating in the Britain in Bloom initiative and this year is no exception. The initiative has been running for over 50 years, and in that time has transformed local communities, established school gardens, regenerated unused areas and helped to unite neighbourhoods with one common goal – to make Britain bloomin’ beautiful!

RSBA Printmaking Festival

RBSA

At Barques, we’re passionate about the arts and the introduction of new audiences, so imagine our excitement when we found out that we could try our hands at printmaking right on our doorstep! The RBSA Printmaking Festival is the first of its kind in Birmingham and has something for all ages, abilities and interests. We’re proud to be supporting the RBSA Printmaking Festival this year – watch this space for more news later in the year!

Education in the Quarter

Education in the JQ

Did you know that you can learn how to upholster your own sofa, or how to programme with a raspberry Pi right here in the Jewellery Quarter? If there’s something you’ve always wanted to create, but don’t think you’re the creative type, you’re in good hands. Pick up a copy of the magazine or check out the online version below to learn more about learning in the JQ.
