Search engine optimisation – or SEO – at first seems complicated with ranking factors, XML sitemaps, 301 redirects and META tags, but it really doesn’t have to be!  Here at Barques have pulled together some easy to follow tips to help you make a positive impact on your company’s search engine results. Whether you’re a small business from Birmingham or not, don’t hesitate to give us a shout to discuss anything in this post.

So let’s start with our 5 Amazing Seo Tips For Small Businesses

Make your site easy to understand.

Within a few seconds of being on your website, a new visitor needs to know exactly what your company does and what your small business is about. Make your brand stands out on every page; Your company’s address, phone number and full name need to be easily accessible – so make sure you have a contact page and if possible add your phone number in the top left or right of your page template.

It should also be easy to find all of your important pages with a navigation bar, and if you internally link your pages strategically within the content of your pages. this will help customers (and Google) navigate your site. For example, if you say “contact us for more information”, you could embed a link to your contacts page. If your site is easily navigated, search engines will favour it. ( and make sure your anchor text is filled in)

It’s also very important that the Metadata for all your pages are filled out with simple and relative text related to your business. Make sure every page has a unique page title tags and meta description – Not sure what to write, just use an accurate description of the page. So people would know what the page is about before they land on it. Try and include keywords related to the topic, but don’t keyword stuff.

Write a blog.

It’s crucial to have written content on your website, which discusses anything from relevant industry news to “top tips” lists and local topics. By developing a significant voice you can make your brand more friendly, approachable and trustworthy as well as providing your customers with quality reading material.

Generally, it’s good to have a catchy, relevant title that makes people want to click, have informative copy, keep it interesting and try and publish a piece of content as often as you can to keep your readers engaged, and also so Google keeps checking your site for the latest articles.

A good angle to take is to try to create content that answers common questions the people search for or your clients may have. This way, when clients search their query in search engines, your web page will be more likely to come up. Google optimises search queries semantically, so it’s much more worthwhile to place emphasis on answering questions rather than keyword optimisation.

Inbound links.

Inbound links are links from an external website that link to your website pages. Each one of these is treated as votes, the more votes you have, the higher the chance Google might show your website page. but make sure not to go crazy and not to spam too much because this could negatively affect your visibility in search engines.

The most effective way to acquire inbound links is with your websites content strategy; by creating an effective content strategy you’ll attract views to your website and if they like it, they may refer to your work by sharing via social media or link to it.

Infographics are a really effective way of doing this because they often get republished in other publications.

Guest blogging is also a great link building method, as your guest blogger’s readers will then also be drawn to your site.

Social media.

Some would argue that it’s now the most important tool in your SEO strategy, as believe it or not your social media activity sends ranking signals to Google and pages are being shown on the results pages.

From social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest, you can share your website’s content and communicate with others in your industry. This, in turn, may gain some important inbound links.

Try and be interactive with your followers and post at least twice a day to make your presence known.

In the current climate, people are always checking sites such as Yelp, Facebook and Google My Business pages to ensure that the company they are going to use is trustworthy.

First of all, check that all of your contact details are correct, and then encourage past customers to give you positive reviews. You can ask them directly, or just influence them to review you by giving them a fantastic experience. The more positive reviews you get, the more traffic you’ll get from directory sites and then a higher ranking in Google.

We are positive that if you follow these tips consistently, you will improve your SEO drastically and gain more visibility in search engines. It’s as simple as this; keep your customers happy, engage on social media and be consistently active and your Google ranking will rocket in no time.

A Bonus tip: Be Mobile Friendly

Mobile searches are on the up, and because of this Google updated its search algorithm to only use your websites mobile version.

This means if your mobile site isn’t up to scratch your rankings will suffer.

Make sure all the content you wanted to be indexed is visible on your mobile site. Don’t think that you need to hide any content because of the lack of space. Instead, try and think about how to display it so it’s easily read and navigated.
