Search engine optimisation – or SEO – at first seems complicated with XML sitemaps, 301 redirects and META tags, but it really doesn’t have to be! We have pulled together some tips to help you make a future-focused impact on your company’s online visibility. Whether you’re from Birmingham or not, don’t hesitate to give us a shout to discuss anything in this post.
Make your site easy to understand.
Within a few seconds of being on your website, a new visitor needs to know exactly what your company does and what your business is about. Make your brand apparent on every page; your company’s address, phone number and full name need to be easily accessible – make a contact page. It should also be easy to find all of your important pages with a navigation bar, and if you interlink your pages strategically this will help customers (and Google) navigate your site. For example, if you say “contact us for more information”, you could embed a link to your contacts page. If your site is easily navigated, search engines will favour it.
It is important that the meta data for your pages are simple and relative to your business – just use an accurate description.
Write a blog.
It’s crucial to have written content on your website, which discusses anything from relevant industry news to “top tips” lists. By developing a significant voice you can make your brand more friendly, approachable and trustworthy as well as providing your customers with quality reading material. Generally, it’s good to have a catchy, relevant title, informative, interesting copy and publish at least one article a week to keep your readers engaged.
A good angle to take is to try to answer common questions your clients may have. This way, when clients search their query in search engines, your site will be more likely to come up. Google optimises search queries semantically, so it’s much more worthwhile to place emphasis on answering questions rather than keyword optimisation.
Build a network of inbound links whereby other sites link back to your page and mention your brand, but be sure not to spam too much because this could affect your visibility in search engines.
The most effective way to acquire inbound links is with your content strategy; create effective content and you’ll attract a range of others to view your website and reference your work. Infographics are a really effective way of doing this because they often get republished in other publications.
Guest blogging is also a great method, as your guest blogger’s readers will then also be drawn to your site.
Some would argue that it’s now the most important tool in your SEO strategy, as your social media activity sends ranking signals to Google. From social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, you can share your content and communicate with others in your industry. Be interactive with your followers and post at least twice a day to make your presence known.
In the current climate, people are always checking sites such as Yelp to ensure that the company they are going to use is trustworthy. First of all, check that all of your contact details are correct, and then encourage past customers to give you positive reviews. You can ask them directly, or just influence them to review you by giving them a fantastic experience. The more positive reviews you get, the more traffic you’ll get from directory sites and then a higher ranking in Google.
We are positive that if you follow these tips consistently, you will improve your SEO drastically and gain more visibility in search engines. It’s as simple as this; keep your customers happy, engage on social media and be consistently active and your Google ranking will rocket in no time.
