University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham has been challenging and developing great minds for more than a century. Unafraid to do things differently, UoB was England’s first civic university, where students from all religions and backgrounds were accepted on an equal basis.

Barques was tasked with ensuring that the branding of three of their food outlets; Wokfresh, Penny’s and their newest addition, Café 1902, all met the quality of UoB’s catering facilities.

Multiple marketing assets were required from Barques as part of each project including themed logo design, signage, menus, packaging, posters, wall decals, napkins and notice boards for outlets: Wokfresh, Penny’s and Café 1902.

Our designs take students on a journey, through thoughtfully crafted assets in each outlet. Think bespoke promotional signage, A-frames, branded posters and directional signage, all complemented by branded offers, display graphics and packaging.

While the Wokfresh branding reflected authentic Chinese-style cuisine, the branding for Penny's took inspiration from a well respected professor in the University.

In contrast, the more sophisticated brand identity of Café 1902 emulated the  Business School gardens which customers overlook as they enjoy their food.

“Barques’ involvement in Wokfresh and Penny’s has made a significant difference to our business. It was great to work with the team and talk through many exciting concepts, the finished product was excellent.”
